India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze Post Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" category.
Extremely High Pollution Readings
Several parts of the city recorded an AQI over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy level established by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times higher than safe limits.
Pyrotechnics Ban and New Changes
Since 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that engulfs the city as the cold season sets in.
However recently, the current local leadership petitioned the supreme court to request a modification of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Legal Decision and Reality
Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, the court approved the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during designated hours throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Many air quality sensors throughout the city registered air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst readings recorded during the festival in at least three years.
Cross-Border Effects
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also initiated a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.
Chronic Environmental Crisis
Extremely elevated readings of pollution in the capital have continued as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.
Near the festival period, the levels of hazardous particles in the air has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe levels ever documented in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Contamination Sources
The situation in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing toxic haze that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air sets in.
Health and Financial Consequences
The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to various studies.
These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is projected to be causing 10,000 early mortalities each year in Delhi.
