Elden Ring's Evasion Move Warrants to Be Celebrated

For those who have experienced the popular action RPG, or nearly any action-adventure title, chances are you're well-versed in the wonderful feature called the “evasion roll.” This evasion technique allows your character to execute a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to avoid all incoming damage and create distance from the bad guy. Sounds handy, doesn't it?

The evasion roll, nevertheless, has gotten plenty of criticism, and not only because of the rolling; some have dubbed it unintelligent, a easy way out, and an implausible action — and in some cases, I concur. Just imagine me tumbling about nearby enemy groups in another popular RPG — they can't hit me! But the title's rolling dodge stands as the roll to outdo all previous rolling dodges, and here's the reason.

Regarding this title, the creators discovered a great way to address all opinions claiming the maneuver is too easy: merely bestow every enemy unreasonable strength, triple that, and all heroes who approaches them will be eternally grateful for their dodge-roll ability, I'm no exception. With so much on the line, pulling off a perfect dodge feels like an achievement, rather than a cheap trick.

No different defensive move in the game approaches this sense of satisfaction and consistency, because swift moves offer limited distance and blocking attempts are readily overcome by tough opponents. One player advised leaping as the primary game avoidance strategy, but besides failing to offer ideal movement, I didn't see how taking a crushing hit might boost my prospects of overcoming challenges (inexperience, possibly).

Perfecting the Skill

While the rolling dodge grants reprieve in an incredibly challenging experience, it demands ability. First of all, Elden Ring's evasion move just activates a frame of protection following you let go of the dodge button, which hinders a hasty, frantic retreat from dangerous scenarios. Moreover, although it may move you aside from enemies, it's significantly more useful to use it as an opportunity to get closer, ideally to their rear, and deliver attacks. Lastly, you must still grasp and foresee foe assaults, as dodging at the start of a prolonged preparation could conclude your immunity prior to the hit connecting… causing significant harm.

A Well-Designed Feature

Even though rolling-dodging in fast repetition may look a bit ridiculous (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't practically possible in Elden Ring. Of course, that doesn't render it a realistic fighting maneuver — exactly the reason it would be pure horror to experience it in a product like a realism-focused RPG — but this is a dazzling imaginative experience being considered, therefore, it doesn't matter?

Comparable to any well-executed dodge roll, this title's dodge motion is enhanced with a small acrobatic jump at the beginning, giving it an energetic feel rather than dropping the character on the floor. According to your loadout, the move can feel extremely nimble or moderately cumbersome, yet it's always swifter and more seamless than the dodge rolls featured in the previous titles. Admittedly, you could plant your large weapon into the ground while equipped with it, but that's your responsibility for not just playing alternative arms (Just kidding — don't play the game with projectile weapons).

Optimal Harmony

The game's dodging mechanic creates the perfect balance between challenge and opportunity, providing prospects of success while endangering that very prospect at the tiniest misstep. Perfect this move, and you'll gain more than triumph, but gratification.
